Charles S. Peirce nació en Cambridge (Massachusetts) en 1839. Era el segundo hijo de una de las familias más destacadas del entorno intelectual, social y político de Boston, y su casa era visitada con frecuencia por eminentes personalidades de la época, tanto del ámbito científico como filosófico. Su padre —Benjamin Peirce— era profesor de Harvard y un reconocido matemático y astrónomo. Desde muy pequeño inició a Charles, por quien sintió una predilección especial entre sus cinco hijos, en el estudio de la física, de las matemáticas y de la astronomía. Peirce podía haber sido considerado en nuestro tiempo un “niño prodigio”.
